The 10th U.S President " John Tyler" , President of The United States



John Tyler: He was the first president to marry in office at the White House. The rugged, as they called his detractors, John Tyler was the first Vice-President to be promoted to the office of the President by the death of his predecessor. They born in Virginia in 1790, he was raised believing that the Constitution should be strictly constructed. He never doubted this conviction. He studied at the College of William and Mary and studied law. Serving in the House of Representatives from 1816 to 1821, Tyler voted against most nationalist legislation and opposed the Missouri Compromise. After leaving the House, he served twice as governor of Virginia. As Senator Jackson lucidly support for President as an option to injury. Tyler soon joined the fight for the rights of the Southern States in the Congress which brought with Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, and the new president of the opposition party "The Whigs" Jackson. The Whigs nominated Tyler for Vice-President in 1840, hoping to help the Pro-rights Southerners, who are not digested democracy Jackson. The slogan "Tippecanoe and Tyler" involved the Nationalist flag waving over a sample of Southern sectionalism. Clay, intending to keep the party leadership into their own hands, played down his nationalist views temporarily; Webster "a Jeffersonian democrat" was proclaimed. But after the election, both men tried to dominate the old Tippecanoe.

Suddenly, President Harrison died, and Tyler was in the White House. At first the Whigs were not so annoying, although Tyler insisted assume the full powers of a duly elected President. He even recited a keynote speech, but seemed full of good doctrine "Whig". The "Whigs" optimistic that Tyler would accept their program, soon became disillusioned. Tyler was ready to engage in the business of banking, but Clay would not accept it. He would not accept the "System of the Ministry of Finance" and Tyler vetoed Clay's bill to establish a national bank with branches in many states. A similar law was approved banks by Congress. But again, in the arguments of the right-wing states, Tyler vetoed it. In retaliation, the Whigs expelled Tyler from their party. All the Cabinet resigned under Secretary of State Webster. A year later when Tyler vetoed a tariff bill, the first indictment against a sitting president was introduced in the House of Representatives. A committee headed by Representative John Quincy Adams, reported that the president had misused his power of veto, but the resolution failed.

Despite their differences, President Tyler and the "Whig", Congress enacted a much more positive legislation. The law of "La Cabaña" allowed a settler to claim 160 acres of land before it was offered to the public for sale, then pay $ 1.25 per acre. In 1842 Tyler signed the bill of tariffs protecting northern manufacturers. The Webster-Ashburton treaty ended a Canadian border conflict; in 1845 Texas was annexed. The administration of this PRODERECHOS states strengthened the presidency. But also it increased sectional cleavage that led toward civil war. To the end of his term, Tyler had replaced the original Whig Cabinet by Southern conservatives. In 1844 Calhoun became Secretary of State. These men later returned to the Democratic Party, entrusted to the preservation of states' rights, the interests of farmers, and the institution of slavery. The "Whigs" became more representative of northern businesses and farmers interests. When the first southern states sesaron in 1861, Tyler led a movement of engagement; failing, he worked to create the Southern Confederacy. He died in 1862, being a member of the House of Representatives Confederate.
