Microsoft Windows Phone / Windows PC

Continuum phones could run traditional desktop apps someday

Microsoft has opened the door to a very interesting regarding the future of Windows phones Continuum and possibility. At a conference a few days ago, a company executive revealed that Redmond is considering allowing computers running Win32 applications Continuum, ie traditional desktop applications such as those used in Windows 7 and earlier.

That certainly sounds interesting, and something that, if implemented well, will bring significant impact on the market, especially in the segment of corporate clients, who like to give their employees a mobile that also replace a laptop to connect a keyboard and screen.

However, the devil is in the details. Depending on how it is implemented, compatibility with Win32 apps could mean that Windows 10 Mobile becomes heavier and less fluid, due to the need to load the components required to run these applications. This would disadvantage the operating system Microsoft regarding Android and iOS for performance.

Another alternative would avoid that problem would be to implement a "bridge" that allows developers to easily convert a Win32 application on a universal app for PCs and phones. Perhaps Microsoft executive really meant this.

In fact, it is already announced that Microsoft will launch a "bridge" of this type in early 2016, so the only question would be how easy it will be to port apps from one platform to another and how much work will be required from the developers in this process.
